THE GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT

                                   White-breasted Nuthatch

This past Sunday, Rob and I joined our friends, Frank & Tracy, to do a bird count for The Great Backyard Bird Count.

This is what we saw during all the laughter and chatting during our walk;

6 Crows

2 Cardinals

5 Juncos

7 Mallards

1 Mockingbird

10 Chickadees (Rob and I hand-fed a few of the cute little bums)

3 Tree Sparrows

2 White-breasted Nuthatches

9 House Finches

1 Downy Woodpecker

3 Mourning Doves

1 Hairy Woodpecker

1 Peregrine Falcon

2 Red-tailed Hawks

1 Sharp-shin Hawk

We also saw a Raccoon having a sleep in a tree cavity and four White-tailed deer.

On the drive home Rob and I saw  1 Kestrel.  Later in the evening, while driving to dinner we also saw 1 Snowy Owl!

The GBBC goes for four days, but due to other commitments this is the only count we really did this year, and it was an enjoyable one.

ANGIE’S ALGONQUIN HAT-TRICK

                                 MALE EVENING GROSBEAK

We took an over night trip to Algonquin Park this past weekend and I ended up having a “Hat-Trick” weekend!! We went up hoping to see Evening Grosbeaks, which we did, and they were a lifer for both of us, as were Pine Grosbeaks. My third lifer of the weekend was White-winged Crossbills, which Rob had seen before.

We also saw and got to hand feed lots of Gray Jays and Chickadees, always fun.

Besides the “lifers”, another exciting sighting was a leucistic Chickadee! We couldn’t believe our eyes!

It was another great weekend to one of our favorite places to visit.

Cheers, Angie
